If you choose to share resources that you have transcribed, I will
be more than glad to post them on the Dauphin County pages. There are some simple
guidelines to follow when you are creating your documents. Remember that a document
that you create in a word processor will not look the same when it is placed on the web.
Everyone has a different browser, screen size, etc. HTML doesn't handle spaces and
tabs. If you create your document with spaces and tabs for column alignment, it may look
good on your screen, but when converted to HTML it will be difficult to read.
You also want to remember that the you shouldn't use carriage
returns to align sentences or columns. They should only be used to end a paragraph.
With that in mind, I recommend that you create your document using
tables to maintain the alignment. Browsers understand tables so when your document is
viewed by different people, it will always look good.
Here is what text looks like using tabs, spaces and paragraphs:
Name, Age, Newspaper, Date of Death (PN = Patriot News)
Aagesen, Mina S. 74 PN 30 Sep 94
Abrams, Etta S. 74 PN 26 Jun 94
Acevedo, Irma 63 PN 17 Sep 94
Here is what the same text looks like in a table: (The table is
invisible)
| Name |
Age |
Newspaper |
Date of Death (PN = Patriot News) |
| Aagesen, Mina S. |
74 |
PN |
30 Sep 94 |
| Abrams, Etta S. |
74 |
PN |
26 Jun 94 |
| Acevedo, Irma |
63 |
PN |
17 Sep 94 |
As you can see there is a big difference.
The same table can also show the borders and have colors. It is very easy to set up, as
long as the table is there!
| Name |

So remember,
