HALL, Samuel S., alderman of the Seventh ward, Harrisburg, was born in Middlesex township, Cumberland county, Pa., March 27, 1849. He is a son of Moses and Catherine (Orris) Hall. He suffered the loss of both his parents by death, when he was a child, and was thrown among relatives and strangers. His education in these conditions was of necessity limited. He was obliged to rely upon his own efforts for getting knowledge and information to qualify him for the duties of life. He became an apprentice to the carpenter trade, and followed this occupation for thirteen years, eleven of which were spent in the Harrisburg car shops. During the years 1880-1 he represented the Seventh ward in the common council. During the years 1885-6-7 he was school tax collector for the Second, Seventh, Eighth and Ninth wards. In April, 1887, he was appointed on the Harrisburg police force, and served continuously on the force until May 1, 1895, when he was elected alderman for the Seventh ward, the office he now holds.
He was married, in Harrisburg, January 11, 1875, to Amanda Feass, daughter of Henry and Dorothy Feass, natives of Germany, but for many years residents of Harrisburg. Of their eight children three died in infancy. Th living children are: Harry, born December 19, 1876; Blanche E., born April 18, 1879; Bertha M., born July 3, 1881; John A. F., born July 8, 1890, and Samuel Z., born December 31, 1893. Those dead are: Lillie D., died September 26, 1875; Lulu W., died May 5, 1887; and Beulah J., died September 20, 1888.
Mr. Hall is a member of State Capitol Lodge No. 70, I. O. O. F., and Dauphin Castle No. 250, K. G. E. In politics he affiliates with the Democratic party. The family attend the M. E. church; Mr. Hall attends the Lutheran church.
