SHOPE, George F., merchant tailor, was born in Linglestown, Dauphin county, Pa., February 19, 1857. He is a son of John and Mary (Mason) Shope, who are referred to in the Halifax sketches in this volume. His parents removed when he was six years old to Dauphin county, where he was educated in the common schools. He then became an apprentice to the tailoring business. After completing his apprenticeship, which he did in Williamsport, Pa., he worked for two years in that city as journeyman. He then went to Harrisburg and worked as journeyman there. In 1879 he returned to Dauphin where he was in business for himself for thirteen years. Since February, 1892, he has been in business in Harrisburg.
He was married in Dauphin, January 20, 1881, to Miss Mary J., daughter of Jacob and Catherine Stephenson, of Dauphin. They have five children: Edna C., Alice W., Harry S., James A. and Paul F.
Mr. Shope has served one term as auditor of the borough of Dauphin, and one term as school director and treasurer. He is an active member of Paxton Lodge, No. 621, of Dauphin, of Nazareth Commandery, No. 125, K. of M., of Harrisburg, and of Capitol City Council, No. 325, Jr. O. U. A. M. He is a Republican in politics. He and his wife are members of the Thirteenth Street Methodist Episcopal church.
